Lake Houston Wilderness Park is a wooded parkland that encompasses 4,786.6 acres. It is the only park owned by the Houston Parks and Recreation Department that has overnight camping and lodging. There are over 20 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails available inside the park.
So I visited Lake Houston Wilderness Park, and let me tell you…it is huge.
I stumbled onto this park one Saturday when I needed to get out of the house and see some sun. I drove around a bit and noticed a ton of cars turning down one particular street. When I saw the sign “Lake Houston Wilderness Park”, I knew I had to go check it out.
After about 10 minutes of driving and following the line of cars, I reached my destination. To enter the park, I had to pay a $3.00 access fee, which was more than worth it since I wound up staying at the park for a good 4 hours or so. I didn’t know what to expect, so I payed my admission fee and drove on in.
When first driving into the park, there is a wall of trees o both sides of the road. At first it seems like that’s all there is, a wall of trees, until you notice various roads that one can turn down to access different sections of the park. I chose the Lake Dabney turnoff, parked and grabbed my camera. There were a number of people already utilizing this section of the park. I saw a family setting up for a kid’s birthday party, aa family hiking the trail and a family fishing. It was a beautiful day so it wasn’t surprising to see so many people taking advantage of the nice weather.
I continued to the “Peach creek North” trail, which lead back into a more wooded area. This part of the park was a bit secluded as I only saw one person walking the trail with a couple of his dogs. It was peaceful and serene, but I wonder what sort of animals are lurking back there. I definitely wouldn’t want to walk that trail at night, but that could be due to the fact that I watch a lot of Forensic Files, so I could be a bit paranoid.
There were a number of trails. I didn’t walk them all (not sure you could in one day) but I plan to go back and take more photos of the trails that I didn’t reach. For my first time being at Lake Houston Wilderness Park, I can say I highly recommend it if you want to take in some sun and nature. It would be an awesome place to conduct a photoshoot and it is also very family friendly.
Anyways, please enjoy more photos from the part below and if you are in the area, you should definitely give Lake House Wilderness Park a look.
